By now, you should realize that COVID-19 cases are climbing in most states. And here in Missouri, it’s especially bad. We all want the virus to go away. We want to go back to our normal lives. We want to see live music shows, and bands want to play live music shows. You can help make that happen. We shouldn’t have to repeat this after all these horrific months, but listen to actual scientists who have spent a lifetime studying these things, and stay six feet apart. Don’t attend functions with large groups of people, even if the governor says it’s OK. Most of all, just wear the damn mask. It’s not for YOUR protection, it’s to protect others. And if everyone does it, we’re all protected. Simple, right?

When we heard Delmar Hall would be closed for the remainder of 2020, we thought we were in danger of cancelling our Holiday Brasstravaganza this year. But The Pageant came through like Santa Claus, so we’ll be having a socially-distant version of  the holiday show on December 12th and 13th. Huzzah! There will be special guests, as always, but please note that there are also some significant changes this year, including making this a seated-only show, with tickets available in groups of two and four. And there will only be 336 tickets available for each show, so THEY WILL GO FAST. To find out more, visit the And while it might be a little tougher this year, crank up that holiday spirit and get ready to have a good time.

The memories are a bit hazy, but we recall a time when we played more than one gig every six months. Of course, there wasn’t a global pandemic back in the day. The good news is, some venues are being creative and finding new ways to bring bands and audiences together while keeping both safe and socially distant. We’ll be playing one of them on October 16The Lot is a bunch of four-person “pods” spread out in a parking lot near Busch Stadium. Sounds reasonable, right? And the following Sunday, October 18, we’ll be at Mount Pleasant Winery in Augusta, where we’re told the day-drinking crowd capacity has been lessened and the scene is much more COVID-safe and mellow (apparently they’ve cut back on the number of drunken bachelorette parties, or something like that). In any event, you’ll need reservations for both, and we hope you’ll get your tickets and come see us. We promise, as always, to deliver a fun show, even if we’re a little bit further away than we used to be.

Venues are closed, gigs have dried up, so you have to take your fun where you can find it. And for us, on Saturday, June 11th, fun was a live-streamed concert from the stage of The Pageant. We had a blast with our special guests Dave Grelle, Anita Jackson, Matt Henry and Jim Peters. It’ll be up awhile longer, so check it out at Thanks to The Pageant staff and sound crew, 201 Productions for their video wizardry, 4Hands Brewing for sponsoring, and to everyone who tuned in. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to stick around to the end, for a special new tune we dedicated to Dave’s dad Frank. It was a moving moment for all of us, and the perfect way to close the show. Hope to see you all again when it’s safe. Until then, please wear a mask.

If you’re looking for the 411 on New Orleans music, you can’t do better than Offbeat Magazine. It’s considered the Bible of the genre, and we were honored to see a review of our latest record, Onward, in the June issue. Writer Jay Mazza said some very nice things about our music, which has us on Cloud 9. Check it out, and if you haven’t listened to it yet, we hope you will. You can find it on Spotify, Amazon and iTunes.

Like everybody, the Funky Butt Brass Band is feeling the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. Many gigs have been postponed or cancelled, due to health concerns or local stay-at-home orders, or both. It pains us to not be able to play our music for our friends, but it is absolutely the right action to take. The most important thing is for everyone to listen to doctors and medical experts, take care of your health and that of your family, practice social distancing, self-quarantine and act responsibly. We will get through this if we all err on the side of caution. Don’t put the most susceptible folks at risk. Support your favorite bands by buying their music online. Support local businesses by buying gift certificates online — when things return to normal, you can go out and have a good time, and hey, it’s already paid for! Support your favorite restaurant by ordering curbside pickup or delivery. Support the less fortunate among us with donations to local charities and food banks. Most importantly, take care of yourself and the ones you love, and we’ll see you in better times. Love and virtual hugs from behind a mask, at least six feet away!

The days, months and years march on, and so do we. Happy to have made it to 2020 with most of our sensibilities intact, and thrilled to announce the impending release of our latest studio album, entitled Onward. The title reflects the act of putting one foot in front of the other, again and again, and moving forward artistically, personally and professionally. We soldier on over various speed bumps, never truly knowing the destination but enjoying the road to getting there. But enough philosophical stuff — let’s talk about the record! It’s 12 tunes, including seven brand-new originals and five interpretations of interestingly chosen cover songs. We have some very special guests on the album, including rising lap steel star Roosevelt Collier ( on our original, “Burn,” and the always-inspiring Anita Jackson doing the Blue Lu Barker classic, “Don’t You Feel My Leg.” Helping us out on keys were David Grelle, Al Holliday and Adaron “Pops” Jackson, so you know it’s gonna be soulful and funky. We’re really excited for you to hear it, so we’re hosting a CD release party at Off Broadway at 3 pm on Sunday, January 26th, with the River Kittens opening. Thanks to Jason McEntire and Sawhorse Studios for engineering and mixing, and to Brad Sarno for his mastering mastery, as always. Please join us as we continue to move…Onward!
